So, how do we pray? Jesus taught us how to pray in Matthew 6:9-13. Jesus said, “This, then, is how you should pray.” He did not say this is what you should say, but rather this is how you should pray. The Lord’s prayer gives four specific things to pray about. One of the best ways to remember these four things is through the acronym P.R.A.Y.


Tell God thanks for who He is and what He has done. Our Father in heaven, hollowed be your name.” (Matthew 6:9a) See also: 1 Chronicles 29:10-13



Confess your sins to God. Tell him how sorry you are for them and that you need His forgiveness. Ask God for strength not to do the sin again. Forgive us our debts, as we also have forgiven our debtors.” (Matthew 6:12) See also: Psalm 51:1-12

My cousin, Tim, had his cancer surgery yesterday. Going into the surgery he had to sign that if the doctors thought it necessary that they could amputate. They were able to save his leg, thankfully. Unfortunately he will have to do some more chemo when he is recovered enough from the surgery.

Brian still has occasional setbacks following his bone marrow transplant. Thankfully he is still moving forward in his recovery, but he still has a long road ahead of him.

Baby Lily has another scope today to determine if she needs a tracheotomy.

Just an update on some previous prayer requests along with one new request:

It was originally thought that baby Lily would have to have a tracheotomy. The doctors ended up deciding against it for the time being, but just yesterday she was put back in ICU due to her throwing up and being short of oxygen.

My cousin Tim is still having a difficult time with his chemo. He is scheduled for surgery on the 29th of this month. Please pray that he will be in good enough condition to endure the surgery so they don't have to postpone.

Please continue to pray for Brian. He is still having a difficult time after his bone marrow transplant and with the side effects of chemo. Please pray for healing and that he can start to regain his strength soon.

Please pray for my Aunt Vernietta (my cousin Tim's mother and my mom's younger sister). She is scheduled for brain aneurysm surgery next month.

Here are updates on some previous prayer requests as well as one new one:

Please continue to pray for baby Lily. She is still in the hospital after her heart surgery, which was expected. Yesterday they discovered something wrong with her swallowing mechanism. She had surgery this morning to fix that, but there were complications. The doctors had to put in a tracheotomy which will be in for a time.

My cousin, Tim, is having a difficult time with his chemo. I think he is either on his last round of it or will soon be doing his last round of it. Please continue to pray for him, his wife, and their two boys.

Brian had a bone marrow transplant last Friday where one of his brothers was the donor. The transplant went well, but unfortunately he had to take some strong chemo in preparation for the transplant, and he will continue to feel worse for a while before he feels better. Please continue to pray for that family.

Please pray for Brian (different Brian) who is the son-in-law of one of my mom's good friends. Brian is a SWAT team leader near Washington, DC, and has had to become involved with the protests in that area. Please pray for the safety of Brian and everyone he works with.

Please pray for peaceful demonstrations. Please pray for the businesses in Omaha that are being affected by the demonstrations the last few nights. Pray for protection of the police officers and national guard. Let the love and care of Jesus come through. They are hurting and seem to only be able to lash out. Destruction of property is not the answer. Prayers for a changed heart that can only be healed by our Heavenly Father. He knows about losing a son.

Can you pray for Khadijah to stop bringing different people especially men’s with evil spirits in her home around her kids (4 year old and 7 year old) and to remove them out of her life forever. Please continue to pray for Lily, who is the infant granddaughter of my cousin, Brent, and his wife, Rogene. Lily had her heart surgery yesterday. They got her through the surgery, and she will be in the hospital approximately two weeks. She can only have one parent with her, so pray for all of them as that little family is temporarily separated.

Please pray for my cousin, Tim, who is my age. He has a cancerous growth in his leg and has been undergoing chemo. He will ultimately have surgery, probably sometime this summer. He is a farmer, so the timing of all of this is very difficult. Tim has a wife, Susan, and two adolescent/teenage boys--Evan and Eli. Please pray as they go through this journey.

Please continue to pray for Brian and his family who are all friends of my family. Brian has been battling leukemia for 3 1/2 months. In the near future he will be having a bone marrow transplant with one of his brothers being the donor. Please pray for all involved as they take the next step in their journey as a family.

We are about 8 or 9 weeks into this new reality of Covid and ministry is different - still happening, but different. Lots of video chats and phone calls to check in and see how kids are doing.

Teens are about the same as adults. Some are good, some are bad, and nearly all want a little freedom and to see people physically. If you’re feeling an emotion, there’s a good chance a student is too as we are all human.

Here are some ways you can be praying for YFC in the next two weeks.


1. Wisdom for our leadership as they decide how and when we re-enter being physically present with students.

2. Parents of seniors who are also grieving the loss of graduation and special trips, parties, and celebration moments

3. Praying for students with mental health issues and homes are aren’t safe.

2. God is still discipling students. There are a few who have grown immensely with the Lord in this time. Praising for that!

Lily was born in early December with a heart defect and was life-flighted from the Kearney area to Omaha the day she was born with the idea that she would have emergency surgery. Luke 11:9-10

Ask and it will be given to you; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives; he who seeks finds; and to him who knocks, the door will be opened.

I’m starting to see just how crazy this invitation is. Jesus gives me far more permission to ask than I take advantage of. He calls us toward searching (Proverbs 2) and tells us we’ll find the treasure. I am allowed to boldly knock. When I try to put that into terms I understand, it makes it more real. Allow me to use an analogy.

Ask: That is giving my kids 100% freedom to ask and ask and ask for anything. I may say no, but that doesn’t ever stop them from asking. “Daddy, can I have a pony and a house all to myself?” Ask away.

Seek: There’s surprises for us each day if we look. Jesus delights in revealing himself to us. That is the same as finding small ways to delight and surprise those around me in small and big ways.

Knock: That is me telling anyone and everyone, you can come knock on my door at any time and I’ll make space for you. Any time. Every time, I’ll listen. And I thought getting up two times a night with my daughter was crazy, but he goes farther than I do.

All it means for me. I’m beginning (key word, beginning) to pray for things bolder. Being more forward with it. And instead of trying to avoid stepping “over the line” or asking for things I’m “not allowed to”, I’m asking Jesus to rebuke me if it’s not possible. I’m asking:

“Jesus, I pray that every person in my entire lineage knows you until you return. If it’s marriage, birth, adoption, foster care, anyone that comes into our family in any way, may they be HOLY unto you. Whether 1 year from now, or 1000. May they all know you and love you forever. Do that for my family.”

“Jesus, miraculously heal ____. I won’t stop asking until you give me an answer of ‘yes.’”

So far, he hasn’t said that my requests are out of line. Ask, seek, and knock.


I think a lot about Ivan, Jake and Mike. Praying specifically that they comes to follow Jesus.


We added 20 kids this week who want to share their faith with 5 friends. That’s 100 kids who will hear about Jesus from someone they know! Pray for their boldness!

Three students reached out independently to ask how to grow in faith! We’re meeting virtually to talk about it!

I love getting to pray for y’all. Thanks for lifting these students up to Jesus!

Prayer Team,

In some ways, I love these trying times. They create tension and pain. Powerful emotions. I’ve found that every moment of growth in my life has been from tension and pain. I even shared today that I love knowing there will be growth and good coming, but I hate the pain of the moment. Can I get the growth without the pain?

The answer is no.

We can’t get something for nothing. Leaning into the tension and pain is the price we pay for growth, but I’ll gladly pay it. I don’t go looking for it, but when it knocks on my door, I want to receive it with joy, knowing my God will do something with it.

Destiny is a process, not a destination. Commit to the pain and tension. Embrace the difficult and becomes friends with fear. For I have discovered the secret. The only way to get to the destination is through the tension and pain. That doesn’t sound that great to most, but I know Jesus.

He led the way by example. Think about this. He was perfectly in the will of the Father on the cross. God’s plan to accomplish His work was in the most bloody way. A sacrifice that Jesus endured for the joy set before him (Hebrews 12:2). It resulted in His glory as he rose from the grave. Our faith is tied to that resurrection.

The wonderful part of it all is this: I go though it with my shepherd and he’s beyond good to me in the midst of it. Even when my fear stops me and the pain numbs me, he is right beside me, beaconing me toward the light. I’m walking that direction with you and looking forward to seeing how he uses it to make me more like him. I pray the same for you…even in the midst of the tension and pain.

Kid’s mental health – there are a number of students who struggle with depression/isolation. Praying for them specifically and against the enemy.

Unsafe homes – there are kids who like going to school and Campus Life to escape home. They’ve been in my thoughts lots as I see names and faces.

Wisdom for decision makers – Ask for wisdom (James 1:2-5) as people lead into new seasons and rhythms. At the government level, leadership, non-profits, and personal.


Being able to minister to kids apart has been fun. It’s a challenge and mixes up the normal flow and routine a ton!

Short and simple – pray that God gives us wisdom on how and where to engage. We’re going to be entirely remote relationships for the foreseeable future and it’s not well travelled waters. Pray we can equip, lead, and serve our volunteer teams well!

For your encouragement:

About last Thursday my brother and I were talking about the different things we’d been reading. The main topic, of course, was whether we thought this Coronavirus was a real threat or closer to Ebola. Our conclusion was both “real threat.”

You are certainly entitled to your opinion, and I’m not here to convince you one way or another. Yet, I do want to tell you what I know about my Lord. I don’t know the future, but I think I KNOW him. He’s got a few things to say.

Anxiety to Peace

John 14:23-27 – ”But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27 Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.”

I love that this was this morning reading. Jesus said this to his disciples on the way to the cross. He leaves us with peace. He is the prince of peace. I’m with him. If he can have it walking toward the cross, then the Holy Spirit can certainly engage with us too!

Fear to Joy and Thanksgiving

Philippians 4:4-8 Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! 5 Let your gentleness be evident to all. The Lord is near. 6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. 7 And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

8 Finally, brothers and sisters, whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is admirable—if anything is excellent or praiseworthy—think about such things.

Wherever you get information could give you hundreds of reasons to be afraid. I experienced my initial battle with it Saturday night for about 5 minutes. Until I was reminded “I never could control or know the future anyway. But I know what I can set my mind on.”

Therefore, I read news, I get reports, I inform where and when I can, and ultimately, I pray. I focus on what I’m thankful for. Everyday, I’m making a paper chain. Our family will write things we’re thankful for each day. NOT to put our head in the sand and avoid pain, but as a reminder to set our minds on things above.

I may never get a chance to lead my family through something like this, however tragic or overblown it may be. I don’t want to miss the opportunity and I pray the news is overblown.

Jesus claims to be so many things. Bread of life, living water, truth, light, the way, grace, judge, I am, resurrection and life, and the Christ among others. I love that in every way he’s saying, “I alone satisfy. Life is ONLY found in me.”

This is why I always pray that kids meet Jesus and follow him, not that they become “Christian.” Christians aren’t bad, neither is Christianity. Yet, many never experience life in Christ because they inadvertently follow Christianity and not the Christ behind the movement. Even for me, Christianity only satisfies when I live life following Jesus because it’s about Jesus and abiding with him. So many times I’ve played the “religious game” of going to church, praying, reading without ever falling more in love with Jesus.

So today, pray with me that these students meet and fall madly, passionately, wildly in love with Jesus, because he’s crazy about them!


“Aiden.” He realized last week while talking about faith; “Then it means that Jesus is real, but I don’t know about following him yet.” His eyes are being opened!

“Jake.” – Still praying he meets and follows Jesus.

Prayers for Jim & Cathy & their 41 year old daughter Meggen. Cathy is getting over a recent knee replacement, Meggen, who had been diagnosed with tongue cancer, and undergone surgery, found out that it is now in her lymph nodes, and they will need to remove most of her teeth before they can start radiation therapy. Jim had heart surgery in December, and is recovering from that, he was also supposed to have a different procedure done this month, but that has been put on hold. Prayers also for Cathy, who lost her mother, who was her last living parent, last August, as she continues to grieve that loss as well.

“Iago” and I had a good talk the other week about his suicide text. He admitted it was a bad day, but didn’t want to go through with it.

“Carl” and his girlfriend are expecting a child. Pray that they get connected to people who can show them what parenting looks like. Neither knows Jesus…yet.

Thank you again for your prayers. We covet them because they change the world around us. Let me give a quick update on some people you prayed for last month. And ways to keep praying for them.

This thought tickles my Spirit so I want to share it with you.

You never know what single act of obedience will be the one that unleashes an avalanche of God’s grace on your life or someone else’s.

This week a leader took a step of obedience and made “care packages” for two students who were having rough weeks and needed a “pick me up.” Both interacted with us this week and said “you have no idea what that did for me.”

What step of obedience do you need to take this week?

Prayer Updates

1. Pray for “Iago.” He consistently listens to lies about his worth and is hammered by the triple threat of porn, depression, and loneliness. Part self-inflicted, and part social awkwardness. He said last night:

a. Update: he had a rough moment this month where he wanted to commit suicide. Even sent the “end it all” texts to me and a few others. Thankfully, he didn’t go through with it, his mom was present to defeat that. Keep praying for his heart.

2. Pray for “Kari.” Still reeling from the loss of his wife, her father told her to move in with her sister. His words were “You’re not my priority right now” as he deals with the pain through alcohol. She’s remains suicidal and depressed and needs some prayer warriors to lift her arms.

a. I got to sit with her and another student as she shared about her father’s anger issues and the struggle with suicide. She’s getting the help she needs. Bonus, we had this conversation in a church at an overnight event. Her first time in a church. A female leader has since followed up with her and continuing to share her worth in Jesus.

New Prayer:

1. Steve – he confesses to another leader that his pornography addiction has moved from videos and images to chat sites. Sexting with strangers. He wants freedom from the addiction, but feels hopeless because it’s been a daily battle since he was 13.

2. Addy – lives in a toxic home. Mom and dad have cheated on each other multiple times, but she preaches forgiveness and reconciliation…even though she doesn’t know Jesus. She’s not far from the kingdom, but needs to meet the Savior still!

Please pray for Brian who is a close family friend. He is in his early 50's and was just diagnosed with leukemia. He is in the MAYO clinic where he will be for a month, and he will be receiving chemo every twelve hours during that time. We don't know anything beyond that right now. Brian's wife, Barb, had battled cancer several years ago and is now a survivor, so their family has been through a lot. Brian and Barb have two teenage children, and their whole family is need of prayer. Thank you!

Welcome to 2020 and the next decade! I hope it’s been fun to look back and see all that God’s done the last 10 years. Here’s a few praises and prayer requests for the new year!


1. I had a student tell me this over break –

“I felt the urge to pray for the first time. Another Campus Life student taught me how to focus on God’s words and I wanted to know how to hear from God. As I did that, I saw a picture of you. Can you teach me how to hear from God?”

2. We asked what the highlight of 2019 was. Two students said:

“Interacting with campus life for the first time.”

Come on Jesus. Keep working!

Please pray for our niece’s husband who is a pastor for a church in Indiana but several times a year he does missionary work in Uganda and trains pastors there to share the gospel with their congregations. Pray for strength and courage for him and that God will allow his work to continue to take seed and grow.

Also, please pray for our son-in-law who injured his knee 2 1/2 months ago but is having difficulties with the doctors and insurance companies doing anything to help him. The pain continues to get worse while the red tape grows longer! Pray that he will get help and action so that his knee will heal. He does a lot of traveling for his job and walking through airports and cramming himself into seats in airplanes is not helping his pain.

A prayer of Thanksgiving that my cousin, Carl, has fully recovered from having a 14 hour heart surgery and being on kidney dialysis after the surgery. Prayer requests for him were asked for in October and November. Thanks be to God.

A prayer request was also made at that time for God’s perfect healing for our brother-in-law, Harry Amen. He suffered a major stroke in October. God called Harry to his heavenly home on December 17th. That was God planned perfect healing for him.

Now I ask for prayers for a middle aged man, Doug. Please pray for guidance and wisdom for his doctors. He had tests done last week for a major digestive problem and will receive the results on Tuesday. Pray also for comfort and peace for Doug and his family.

Hello church. Would you please add my aunt JoAnn Johnson in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to your prayers. She has a reoccurrence of endometrial cancer (she has already had a hysterectomy) and it is too close to some artery in her leg or lower area for them to do surgery. They were going to start radiation but it seems to have gotten delayed which isn’t good. She is now not even wanting to talk on the phone, due to pain and tiredness I am sure, and will go to Iowa City Tuesday for treatments or something, I did not get good information about it. She is the youngest of my mother’s siblings at 74. My mom is 93 and she depends very much on her younger sister. It is going to be very difficult for my mom in particular if and when JoAnn passes. Prayers so needed!

The last two days have had ups and downs. On Thursday, Jason informed us that it seemed Ashley was resting more comfortably following surgery for a tracheotomy. They did this to take her off the ventilator and give her more comfortable oxygen support. Only her right lung is working, the left lung is non-functioning. Jason said she looked more peaceful and even appeared to respond to the therapist who asked her to stick out her tongue. But there was no definite conclusion that she had responded on command. However, it gave us all some hope.

Yesterday was a difficult and frightening day. At 1:00 yesterday afternoon, Ashley’s oxygen level dropped and her heart stopped. CPR was immediate and they were able to revive her within two minutes. She was rushed to a CT Scan so that her doctors could determine what could have caused this sudden turn. According to Jason’s last update, which we received late last night, Ashley was once again resting comfortably and “stable”. The doctors have no definite answers as to what caused her to code yesterday. And they are still puzzled by the fact that she is not responding to all the treatments. She remains in an “unresponsive” state, but her vital signs are positive. She is hooked up to an EEG so they can continuously monitor her brain activity; she is hooked to an EKG, has an NG (nasal-gastric) tube to drain her intestines, a tracheotomy for oxygen, as well as a feeding tube. They also have a TV monitor on her and are continually videotaping in order to document any changes to her condition. Jason assures us that she is receiving excellent care and he is encouraged by this. His last message to me was, “I am holding strong.” So are we all.

For “Kari” and “Ben” this year as they go through the Christmas season without their parents.

Praying for “Jess” as her family welcomes back her brother into the family. For healing, joy, and their growth.

Pray for “Greg’s” family. There’s lots of tension in the family over some poor choices he made. Now his sin is affecting everyone, and it runs deep.

Pray for mom that she gives control to Jesus

Pray for step-dad that he leads and doesn’t withdraw

Pray for dad and step-mom that they fall more in love with Jesus in the pain

Pray for Greg that he turns to Jesus and changes his heart.

Overall, pray for healing for the family.

God’s at work in the life of a student. A young man texted this last week to one of his peers:

“Jo told me last night he felt the urge to pray which he hasn’t in years. And he heard God speak to him and tell him that he’s not alone.”

We brought another PT staff member to our team to start fundraising! Ryan Miksch will be co-leading the Kiewit campus with me until a time he feels equipped and empowered to do it on his own! Love it!

Ashley is currently in the ICU at University of Washington Hospital in Seattle, Washington. She is on a ventilator

and is unresponsive. Ashley is battling a rare condition that has caused her immune system to attack her brain cells.

She has a team of 8 specialists, from all categories of medicine, who have been tirelessly working to get a firm diagnosis.

There have been several attempts to diagnosis the cause of this. After several spinal taps and countless MRI’s of her spine

and brain, as well as daily EEG’s, they have made a determination that a large, benign cyst which formed on her ovary

(softball size) has caused this condition. Late last Friday night (22nd) they removed her ovaries in an emergency surgery.

They have ruled out meningitis, but are calling all of this a form of encephalitis. She has been on high dose antibiotics, and

is now receiving large doses of steroids. To date there has been no improvement.

Ron and I are leaving this week to travel to Mississippi in order to take care of our son’s home and dog, so that he and his

family can remain in Seattle at Ashley’s side. We do not know how long we will be away.

We trust entirely in God’s perfect will for Ashley’s life. We ask for continued prayers for her, for all our family, and for

safe travel for us as we drive south. God bless each of you, our church family. May you all know a blessed Thanksgiving.

Well the Big C is here.

Some of you know that I am married to the nicest most caring child of God that you could ever know.

That's why it's so not fair. It defies logic why such a dear person let alone MY WIFE should have to go through all that she has and now this.

We just found out that Linda has to have a bone marrow biopsy. The doctor is pretty sure, because of symptoms, that she has multiple myeloma.

Yes, I know that many people have experienced terrible tragedies but I would covet your prayers for her and her healing, for peace, and stronger faith for both of us.
