Day Nineteen

Lamentations 3:16 (ESV)
He has made my teeth grind on gravel, and made me cower in ashes; …

This chapter of Lamentations focuses on the suffering of a person and the ultimate remembrance and faithfulness of God. Face in the dirt to the point of getting into the mouth and cowering in the ashes is an ultimate symbol of repentance and mourning.

On Ash Wednesday, the beginning of the season of Lent, we are marked with ashes with the words, “Remember you are dust and to dust you shall return.” This captures the essence of Genesis 3:19.

Our lives would be just one long lament if it weren’t for John 3:16 where we hear of God’s grace and mercy! Thanks be to God!
