Day Eighteen

Jeremiah 3:16 (ESV)
And when you have multiplied and been fruitful in the land, in those days, declares the Lord, they shall no more say, “The ark of the covenant of the Lord.” It shall not come to mind or be remembered or missed; it shall not be made again.
This prophecy is against the people of God who have moved away from living lives which demonstrate trust and faith in God. The Ark of the Covenant has been the symbolic reminder of the presence of God in the Temple and the lives of the people. A new time is coming when the throne of God will not be the Ark but rather Jerusalem itself. The symbolic image will be forgotten.
As Christians, it is too easy for us to make symbolic images of our faith which may have nothing to do with the promise of John 3:16. Luther used the word “adiaphora” to describe such things. They are neither forbidden or embraced in Scripture as having anything to do with our salvation relationship with Christ. They are neutral and yet many times we treat them as having utmost importance.
What adiaphora is there in your faith life?
How can you hold focus on Christ and not on the adiaphora?
Spend some time in prayer of confession asking God to forgive you in those times when you worshipped the adiaphora instead of God.
